Welcome to Essex, New York. Originally settled in 1765 by William Gilliland and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, the Essex Village Historic District immerses residents and visitors alike in the rich heritage and soothing rhythms of pre-Civil War days.

With a minute population (671 in 2010 census) and abundant shoreline, wilderness and pastoral farmland; magnificent outdoor activities (Champlain Area Trails hiking, cross country skiing, biking, sailing, etc.); locally grown, farm fresh food (Essex Farm, Full and By Farm, etc.); and a surprising abundance of cultural and artistic resources, Essex offers a unique and enriching lifestyle. And yet, despite it’s bucolic, rural setting, Essex enjoys convenient access to ferry, airport and train transport making it convenient and accessible to visitors throughout the Eastern United State and Canada.

Located in New York State’s Essex County along the Adirondack Coast of Lake Champlain, Essex, New York is only 113 miles north of Albany, NY; 29 miles south of Plattsburgh, NY; 86 miles south of Montreal, Canada; and 17 miles south-southwest of Burlington, VT.
