About Michelle Zelkowitz
Michelle majored in art at Queens College of the City University of New York. After receiving her teaching credentials from the University of Montana, she began a career in art education. She earned her Masters’ degrees from Adams State College in Colorado and her doctorate from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati.
Michelle travels to the wilderness to draw inspiration and capture memories of the vast landscapes paying special attention to details and to light within the environment. Returning home she creates dramatic works that develop in response to the rhythmic qualities of natural forms, their contrasts of line, light, color and space.
This show comprises a series called “Faces and Landscapes.” In “Faces” Michelle uses what she calls, “the mirror effect,” a combination of multiple shots of the same place used to create patterns. Within each of these pieces a comical face emerges. Michelle invites you to “Find A Face.”
In “Landscapes” she emulates the great artists, such as Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran and Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School who romanticized the wilderness.
