This happy summertime doodle of Essex flowers was drawn by local artist and children’s book author, Amy Guglielmo. Learn more about her Touch the Art series, and you can often find her whimsical art at the Adirondack Art Association in Essex, NY and at Stonybrook Gallery in Morrisonville.
A Fanfare for Essex Flowers
Essex flowers (and flags) are a quintessential visual detail of summer in our fair village. Daffodils in springtime. And hyacinth and dandelions. Then lily of the valley and lilacs and peonies and day lilies. And I’ve overlooked all of the blooming fruit trees. The apples and cherries. And the locust trees which smell divine for about a week, especially if the temperature is warm in the afternoon or early evening…
And there are so many exotic irises among the Essex flowers which clamor for attention. And the more restrained but elegant hydrangeas which seasonally transform from woody twigs to lush foliage and giant pompom blooms. Then there are my personal favorites, poppies, especially fire engine red (after a few decades in the sun) poppies scattered against a green field. Migratory Haven just north of the village offered the most spectacular poppy viewing recently, but small drifts of poppies ornament Essex flowers in multiple yards around town.
And then there are the wild Essex flowers that surprise us at turns on a CATS trail like white and purple trillium and – if we’re really fortunate – jack-in-the-pulpit. And shad blow at the edges of fields in springtime… There are so many Essex flowers to celebrate and doodle. Perhaps a future doodle guide will be dedicated to Essex flowers!
