College For Every Student (CFES) is honoring Beekmantown Elementary, Crown Point Central, Keeseville Elementary, Peru Central, Plattsburgh High, Ticonderoga Central and Willsboro Central Schools as 2014-2015 “Schools of Distinction” for their efforts in creating high levels of college and career readiness and for raising aspirations among their students.
These seven Adirondack schools are among 33 schools nationwide who received the CFES award that recognizes exemplary programs that incorporate the three CFES core practices: Mentoring, Leadership Through Service, and Pathways to College. These schools provide intensive exposure to the three practices for targeted students, known as CFES Scholars, and also create a culture that promotes college and career readiness for all students.
Criteria
“Attaining ‘School of Distinction’ status recognizes a successful year-long journey to build college readiness school wide,” said Steve Boyce, who leads the “School of Distinction” program.
Through end-of-the-year portfolios and reports, schools documented the impact and power of their work.
“The seven Adirondack schools are not only helping their Scholars become college ready, but they’re also sharing their best practices and lifting up other schools across the country and beyond,” said CFES President & CEO Rick Dalton.
One example of excellence was developed by Keeseville Elementary School where every classroom adopted a college at the beginning of the school year. Each classroom was decorated with that college’s pennant and mascot. Each child received a t-shirt from their college and wore the shirt for “College Spirit Fridays.” Students delivered facts about their college on morning announcements throughout the year.
