On Tuesday, March 14 at 7:30pm, the Whallonsburg Grange Hall will present “From Soil to Plate: Growing (and Eating) Better Food,” with Dan Kittredge. This is the final lecture in the winter Lyceum series entitled “Living and Farming on This Land,” co-sponsored by the Essex Farm Institute.
A critical issue in the food supply currently is that farmers get paid by quantity not quality. The principles and techniques necessary for growers to produce much higher quality food are generally available, but the economic structure of farming has made it difficult to focus on this. This presentation by Dan Kittredge, an organic farmer for many years and Director of the Bionutrient Food Association, will look at how farmers can grow healthier, tastier crops on land that is vital and ecologically sound; and how consumers can become engaged in improving the quality of the food supply.
Dan Kittredge has been farming organically for 30 years, and biologically for the last 10. He and his wife manage a 24 acre mixed farm in central Massachusetts with 2.5 acres of intensive vegetable, 8 hoop houses, pastured poultry, grass fed beef, and perennials in development. He is the founder and Executive Director of the Bionutrient Food Association, which is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to increasing quality in the food supply. He presents courses for growers regularly across North America.
General admission is $5 per person, students and farmers are free.
