Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Thanks to Rick & Karen Dalton for sharing the photo above with us!
Do you recognize this building? It was immediately recognizable to some:
Dianne Lansing: I think this is the Sherwood Inn, now the home of George and Susan Davis.
Catherine DeWolff: Rosslyn.
That’s right, this is Rosslyn, at one time the Sherwood Inn, and now again a home. The building resides on Lake Shore Road on the northern edge of Essex.
What changes do you notice to the building and area compared to today? Several changes have been made to the exterior since this photo was taken. What do you notice?
Right away I note the large trees along the sidewalk are no longer present. The shrubbery and other tended plant-life around the base of the home is also different today. The porch on the front of the house has also since been removed, along with the porch on the side (or is that only a roof acting as an awning over a patio area or something similar?).
What other changes do you note? When do you think this image dates to? The home was built in the late 1820s, but this image is surely much closer to our present date than its beginning one. What do you think?
Is this a photograph? I cannot tell.
