Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Recognize this corner location in Essex? When do you think this photo was taken? What do you recognize? What has changed?
Here’s what the community has already had to say:
Dianne Lansing: Its the Town Hall!
Judi Root: ah-ha, been there and yes, that is it 🙂
The caption on the photo looks like it reads: “Adirondack House, Essex, NY.” I’ve rarely heard this building referred to as such, but it was once known as the Adirondack Hotel and before that Wright’s Inn. Today it is the Town Hall.
From the back side of the postcard (seen right) the postage date reads July 7, 1913 which dates the postcard for us. The line along the side also tells us it was printed by W.H. Cruikshank.
The two most obvious differences in this postcard’s scene compared to today are those large trees on the lawn behind the Town Hall are no longer there and the long porch on the front of the Town Hall building has also removed at some point.
Do you notice any other differences? Have any other thoughts to share? Please leave a comment below!
