Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Do you like this one?
Do you recognize this stretch of lake front? What can you identify? What has changed? When do you think this photo was taken? Here’s what the community had to say already:
Ann Dickinson: I don’t recognize it but I’d love to visit there in summer!
Fred Backhaus: I see 1936 Ford
I’m not sure what street this is. Do you think it’s part of Beggs Park Circle/Lake Street? Or another side street that goes along the lake?
In the photo, to the left is the Elmwood Cabins that are identified in the caption (though they appear more like houses than a traditional cabin). We previously shared another old photo of the Elmwood that gave a closer view and more details. You can see that one here: “Vintage Postcard: The Elmwood.” On that photo the caption calls the buildings “Elmwood camps.”
It also appear to me as if the second building from the right is a commercial garage of some kind. There is a large sign rising above the roof, although most of it is block by tree foliage. I believe I can make out the word “boat” fully, and I see a “ca” that may be the beginning of the word car. It also looks like there is a gas pump along the side of the street by the lake — perhaps for boats?
What do you think? Can you make out more details than I can? Or perhaps you know if a garage used to be in this location? Share any history you know and any other thoughts you’d like!
