Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
We give our thanks to Susie Drinkwine for sharing another great old photo of Essex, NY. When do you think this one was taken? Do you recognize the buildings? What has changed since this photo was taken?
From left to right as we go into the background of the photo the buildings visible along Main Street are: the old Post Office, the Old Brick Store, Wright’s Inn (now the Town Hall), the Essex Community Church, and finally the Belden Noble Memorial Library (once Greystone Cottage).
The large sign on the opposite side of the street reads “Garage G.T. Murphy.” Does anyone recall this business? What can you tell us about it?
Two obvious changes that I notice between the buildings on this street in this photo and how they appears today are missing features from facades — the long overhanging roof on the Old Brick Store is no longer there and neither is the porch on the Town Hall. What else do you notice?
