Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Thanks to Todd Goff for sharing the photo above with us!
Here’s what he had to say when he shared it:
The attached photo is of a ship in Whallons Bay. It is not the Kestrel. It came from a 2×3″ negative from the estate of Philip Walker and was printed by Doug Pedan for me years ago. I have no idea what it is. I will send it to the LCMM or LCT hoping they may have information. Upon seeing your beautiful image of the Kestrel at the boathouse it reminded me of this one! Thanks.
Todd may have been referring to either this old photo or this vintage postcard when referring to an image of the Kestrel that we previously shared. The Kestrel is a yacht owned by the Keyser family that frequently sailed Lake Champlain the 1890s until the late 1930s and docked in Essex.
Do you recognize the ship on the lake? I’m guessing the ship dates to about the same period as the Kestrel, late 1800s-early 1900s. What do you think? When do you think the photo was taken?
Can you make out what that is to the left out on the lake? It appears like one is a small boat and the other is something jutting out of the lake (unless they are attached to each other, but that doesn’t appear to be the case).
