Every week we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Take a look at the most recent imagine above! Do you recognize this magnificent Essex home? The photo is labeled, “The Ross Mansion, Essex, NY,” but the home is more often known as Hickory Hill.
Hickory Hill was built in 1822 by Henry Ross. The stately home is of the Federal architecture style. Learn more about Hickory Hill’s history and architecture here.
Check out the commentary from the Essex community about the photo of this historic building:
Lorraine Townsend Faherty: Built by Henry Ross, son of Daniel Ross who married daughter of William Gilliland. Henry was my great great grandfather.
Lorraine Townsend Faherty: [It’s] Hickory Hill
Kelly Youngs-schmitt: At the top of the hill up behind the Essex Inn.
Deborah Sells Blake: The Townsend children still share ownership and keep this historic home beautiful. I have many happy memories from my visits there!
Kelly Youngs-schmitt: Heading to Essex tomorrow. Probably drive up the hill to check it out.
Jane Hurlburt Scaia: Awesome
