Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Here’s another postcard featuring an iconic location: the Split Rock Lighthouse. Do you recognize it? When do you think this dates to? Notice anything of note? It looks like a warm dawn, but the pinkish shading could be from age —what do you think?
Here’s what the community has already said:
Dianne Lansing: The “new” metal light tower hadn’t been built yet.
Mary S Houston: How short the trees were!!??
See the back side of the postcard below, which tells us the postcard was made by “Detroit Publishing Co.” The stamp area also tells us it only cost one cent in postage to mail the postcard. That should help estimate a date… Some research shows that postcard postage cost one cent in the US from 1919 through 1951, so I think it’s safe to say this postcard dates between those years.
We’ve shared several old postcards and photographs of the Split Rock Lighthouse previously. See them all here and compare the view of it over a span of years: Split Rock Lighthouse Archives.
