Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Have you ever seen this old postcard before? The title — “Yachting on Lake Champlain” — tells us that this scene is taking place on our lake, although there are minimal landmarks to pinpoint the exact location. Do you see anything of note?
Here are the comments we’ve received from the community already:
Jeff Warner: Crater Club race looking north towards Cannon Point.
Christine Herrmann: Where are the mountains?
Yes, no mountains in the background does look strange, but it does look like there are slight curves on the landmass (Vermont) in the background. I think it’s just the quality of the image that didn’t capture the view in the distance very well. What do you think?
When do you think this postcard dates to?
The back of the postcard (see below) is stamped with the year 1909 by the post office, which is when it was mailed. However, in the small print on the left side I believe I can make out “Made in Germany 1900.” Which that would date the postcard creation to that year.
Does the scene on the postcard bring up any memories for you? Have anything else to share? Please leave a comment below!
