Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. We shared another old stereoview image last week. Do you like this one?
This image is overlooking the town from some distance, and you can see Lake Champlain and the peaks of buildings in the background. I’m not sure exactly where the photo was taken — is this from the north? Do you recognize the mountain in the background? It looks like there is some kind of building out on the lake on an outcropping of some kind – about where the Old Dock is now.
I’m also unsure of what the rocks are in the foreground. It looks like they’re deliberately placed on perhaps a cement base (or maybe that’s just a natural flat-ish rock rising out of the ground that someone took advantage of?). What do you think it is? To the right it appears like the ground is disturbed – maybe these are rocks a farmer removed from a field?
What can you recognize? Can you note any changes in the village? Share your thoughts in the comments!
If you click on the image you can open it in a new window and enlarge it to better see details. Try it!
What is a Stereoview?
You may be wondering – just what is a stereoview? Historically, photographers once produced these double image cards to be used with a stereo viewer. The stereoview card was inserted into the device, and when looked through it gave the appearance of 3-D.
