“While we pride ourselves on recognizing that true learning often takes place beyond the four walls of a classroom, there is also undeniable merit in having the structure fit the quality of the learning,” offered Head of School Dexter Mahaffey at the launch party Tuesday evening for the Vermont Commons School $850,000.00 Capital Campaign for the Arts and Science.
Driven by the guiding principles of students mastering fundamental academic disciplines, engaging in artistic expression of all kinds, and becoming active and engaged community members in order to respond to the challenges of today’s ever-changing world, the Board of Trustees created this initiative in order to finish the natural evolution of what was once an environmental engineering building into the permanent home of this remarkable middle and high school.
The building of new spaces and the expansion of existing classrooms will create dynamic environments for students to experiment, explore, and create. The creation of a new Arts Wing, adjacent to the UVM Horticultural Farm, will provide a light-filled visual arts studio—as well as a sound insulated Music/Theater studio – and gallery space. A new Physics Lab will accommodate student experiments in a dedicated classroom/maker space for the STEM sciences. Other new spaces will include a private tutoring/writing center and a reception and lobby space on the first floor.
“We are incredibly excited to have raised $611,000.00, nearly 75% of our goal, in the quiet phase of the Campaign,” says Mary Hamilton, Director of Advancement and Strategic Growth, “And are confident that our community will come together to finish this campaign and bring this transformative project to fruition.”
