Good News! Hunting season is over and that means the Field and Forest Trail, the Homestead Trail, and the Three Creeks Trails have re-opened!
Last Saturday’s Survival Skills workshop was a fabulous success! Fourteen people joined Pok-O-MacCready instructors Zack Floss and Alex Mihavics on the Blueberry Hill Trail system in Elizabethtown. Some participants drove over two hours to attend and a student at SUNY Plattsburgh signed up his mother, who is climbing the 46 High Peaks. He told us he was concerned about her safety and wanted to make sure she knew what to do in case of an emergency.
The program covered topics such as making a fire, building a “leave no trace” shelter, and envisioning some survival scenarios like what to do when a day trip becomes an unplanned overnight. The response was so enthusiastic that we are planning an advanced survival skills workshop sometime in the next few months. Stay tuned.
Trail of the Week
This week we suggest walking in the woods on the beautiful CATS Beaver Flow Trail, with trailheads on Cook Road, just west of Leaning Road in Essex and on Walker Road about 1.25 miles west of Whallonsburg. This easy, 3-mile round trip or loop trail takes you through a forest owned by the Eddy Foundation on an old woods road and a more narrow trail. It crosses a stream and has a few gentle climbs. Click here for a map of the trail.
