Amid increasing challenges facing urban schools because of market forces and standards, College For Every Student (CFES) offers hope and support for city educators and the students they serve, according to Left Behind, a book published by John Hopkins University Press.
In this new book, a team of education scholars from the University of Michigan examines reforms in urban schools and reveals challenges faced by educators to develop new courses while providing social support for students to build college-going cultures.
With a release date of November 30, the book provides insight into the troubling trajectory of public policy while offering teachers and administrators tactics for overcoming barriers.
“The CFES program is considered valuable because it does not dictate, but instead offers various models that can be applied to the schools’ specific contexts. This is a marked contrast to the strategic, control oriented approaches to reform used in many major initiatives undertaken by schools and states,” according to Left Behind.
Urban educators contend that “CFES has given us the opportunity to think broader than we would have otherwise.”
The book shares, in a recent CFES survey, “slightly over 90% of the respondents indicated that they knew about financial aid and scholarships,” compared to a fraction of that number for students not involved in CFES.
“It is very important to us that our Scholars understand how to access financial aid, grants, and scholarships,” said CFES CEO & President Rick Dalton. “Every year there is unclaimed free money and our goal is to make sure that our students are accessing available resources.”
“Support provided by CFES enabled students and teachers to build relationships with community organizations and college partners, thus providing alternative means to compete within the urban market.”
Over the last 25 years, CFES has helped 100,000 mostly low-income students in 700 K-12 schools and districts in both urban and rural communities in the United States become college and career ready. To find out more about College For Every Student, visit www.collegefes.org.
