This Thursday, we’ll go to the Bobcat Trail to work on it and the Field and Forest Trail. We’ll put up the trailhead sign so people can easily see where the trail starts. And then we’ll do a maintenance hike—more fun than you can ever imagine. Meet at Dogwood Bakery at 9:00 AM.
Thanks to Catherine and Taylor Haskins for the Soundwaves Concert series. Last Thursday’s concert that benefitted CATS was another excellent show. We are looking forward to next year’s line-up.
Tales from the Trails: Charlotte’s Story
Here’s the “Charlotte Story”—an experience she had during her internship with CATS:
On my last “Thursdays on the Trail” project, there was a little girl who tagged along with her grandparents. She was around 5 or 6, entering kindergarten. Her grandfather told me about how much she loved to go outside and go “nature-ing” as she called it.
As we walked along the trail, clipping overhanging branches, she would continually stop to look at one thing or another. She was so excited to see tiny frogs, a red eft, flowers, and mushrooms. It was adorable to see this tiny figure squat down to examine mushrooms, noticing their color and shapes. I really enjoyed showing her the interesting things that are in the woods and I realized she reminded me of myself when I was little.
I have strong memories of walking in the woods with my parents, the potent smell of wet leaves on the ground as I attempted to catch little frogs and red efts and the startled jumps of chipmunks skittering away from me. The days spent exploring nature were a big part of my childhood and formed my love and curiosity of the wilderness today. I wanted to instill the same types of memories and feelings in her so that when she is older, she will remember happy days walking in the woods and her appreciation of nature will stay strong as she grows older.
