I’ve been doodling a lot lately… I read somewhere that your doodles tell a lot about your style… I tend to doodle odd figures, flowers, swirls and circles. What does that say about me? I have no idea. All I know is that when I doodle, I feel free to explore things and just be me. ~ Susan Faith Corl (You Are Your Doodles)
As I told the Depot Theatre audience this summer, I’ve been a closet doodler for years. In fact, I’ve always been a closet doodler. Except when I was a child (when it was normal and encouraged) and in recent years (when I came out of the doodle closet.) I have no idea if my doodles reveal anything useful about my style – or anything about me at all, for that matter – but I suppose I’m not too concerned with that.
Recently I’ve doodled almost three dozen historic homes in Essex. They’re literal, slightly boring illustrations. I’ve taken some liberties to be sure, but they are relatively restrained. On other occasions my doodles harken back to no physical world antecedents at all. Abstraction. Pure creativity. A wandering pen hitchhiking a wandering mind… In many respects, these uninhibited, free-for-all doodles are my favorites. They are reminders of the wide open freedom that doodling permits. We recently shared an Essex abstraction by Michelle Maron, a perfect proof that “doodling – freedom”! Each time I look at that doodle I feel capricious and happy. What about you? Can you liberate your pen or pencil long enough to discover the joyful experience when when doodling liberates you to explore and just be you?
