With hopes of “priming the pump”, I’d like to share some Essex bobcat photos. Maybe, maybe it will inspire a stealthy wild cat or three to venture my way this winter.
With fresh snow on the ground, it’s once again perfect conditions for tracking wild critters wandering in our midst while we slumber. And sometimes while we’re wide awake. I’ve been snooping around in our woods and meadows for the last couple of days, and I’ve spied plenty of coyote and deer tracks. Also fox, wild turkey, rabbit or hare, squirrel and lots of Labrador Retriever tracks! But so far I’ve identified no bobcat (Lynx rufus) tracks. So for inspiration I’m looking back at some previous Essex bobcat photos.
That image above comes from my post, “More Bobcat Images“, which was published on Rosslyn Redux last July (but captured on a mounted trail cam the previous fall/winter). A slide show of other Essex bobcat photos from that series appears in the following video. (Note that the default date shown in the images is incorrect.)
Roughly a year prior, the same trail cam (in the same exact location) captured this stealthy bobcat.
Essex friend and wildways scout John Davis was monitoring the camera while I was away, and four separate photos (on two separate occasions) of this healthy bobcat — or possibly two different bobcats? — prompted the following ebullient message from John.
“What joy to have such lovely creatures on our lands!” ~ John Davis
A joy indeed. And I still can’t believe that this sly feline has been slinking around in our back woods and meadows without ever permitting me to catch a glimpse of him/her. Not even a footprint! (You can read the full post at “Bobcat Sighting“.)

John has written multiple articles on the Essex on Lake Champlain blog about local wildlife, including these two bobcat posts: “Lynx rufus: Our Resilient Bobcat”and “Why Bobcats Should Be Protected.” If you want to learn more about our wild neighbors read through his accounts!
There are also some other local bobcat sightings depicted on the Essex Blog including this “Adirondack Bobcat Sighting” and a “Chimney Point Bobcat.”
