‘The Galileo Effect’: Transforming College Opportunities for Low Income Students by 2025
CFES Center – Essex, New York
April 9-10, 2014
The Galileo Summit will bring together higher education and corporate leaders, funders, policy makers, secondary educators from a variety of international contexts to explore and debate critical issues relating to the structure, policy, pedagogy and funding of ‘College 2025’. Following the Summit, the organizers will produce a solutions-driven white paper on what college will look like in 2025 and what action we must now take to significantly increase the proportion of low-income global citizens with college degrees.
CFES Summit Program Overview
MIT President L. Rafael Reif recently wrote that higher education in the future will be “more accessible, more effective and more affordable for human beings than ever before.” But many other educational, corporate and civic leaders across the globe are far less sanguine about the future of college. Broken funding formulas and poorly prepared students, combined with inequities in who attends and who graduates sound an alarm.
There is agreement, however, on two points: new technologies will require a Galileo-like shift in our perception and experience of teaching and learning by revolutionizing current models of delivery. And, we need to ensure that underserved populations – defined by race and income level – can leverage these changes to become more college ready with the tools to be successful.
To meet job-market needs, the USA alone must ensure that an additional 10 million students graduate from college by 2025. To build a strong and vibrant society, it’s critical we have talented, flexible individuals from all backgrounds, capable of leading, innovating and navigating significant future domestic and global challenges.
The conference will take place the College for Every Student (CFES) conference center, which is attached to the Essex Inn, Essex, New York, USA.
