The Whallonsburg Grange Hall will launch its six-part Fall Lyceum series, “What’s the Big Idea?” on Tuesday, September 26 at 7:30. This series covers a wide range of topics, from science to history and the arts, as presenters speak about the central concept behind a book or project.
The first lecture, “Making It Up in Vermont: Ethan Allen,” will be presented by Nick Muller, author of Inventing Ethan Allen and a specialist in Vermont history. He’ll be discussing how a man who never held a commission in the Continental Army, had only one military victory in the Revolutionary War, and tried to return Vermont to the British Empire became a Vermont and American icon. A retired professor of history, college president, and historical society director, Nick Muller has edited or authored six books and numerous scholarly and popular articles. Nick lives in the village of Essex and is active in local organizations including the Essex Community Fund, Fort Ticonderoga, the North Country SPCA, and Elizabethtown Community Hospital.
The remaining lectures in the series are “Why World War II Still Matters,” presented by UVM lecturer Andy Buchanan (October 3); “Look, Hear, Speak: Guerrilla Portraiture” with photojournalist Barry Goldstein (October 10); “Dark Horse Fiddlemaker: Carleen Hutchins” by author Quincy Whitney (October 17); “Sounds and Silence” with music educator and chorale director Jennifer Moore (October 24); and on Sunday, October 29 at 3pm, climate scientist Dr. Curt Stager will present “Leaving a Trace: Humans in the Adirondacks.”
All lectures begin at 7:30pm except Leaving a Trace, as noted. Admission is $5.00, students are free. For more information, visit www.thegrangehall.info.
