Wellness Workshop
Marianne Patinelli-Dubay, PhD
Sunday, December 4, 2016 – 12-2 pm
Come read and listen to 43 lines of sacred Buddhist scripture, learn what one of the most often chanted Buddhist sutras has to say about the relationship between suffering and insight, between your yoga practice and a flourishing life. Alternately described as completely crazy and as wisdom beyond wisdom, the Heart Sutra is a scripture, a poem, a small river of prayer that we can each fold into our meditation and yoga practices to help carry us over the hollows of personal suffering. We will listen to the Sutra chanted in Tibetan and Japanese and read two very different translations to meditate on together. We will consider what this 7th century teaching might mean to each of us today and how it informs our personal relationship with yoga as a way of softening life’s inevitable transitions between suffering and illumination. Yoga teachers will gain insight into how they might integrate these passages into their classes in order to help students on their paths and students will benefit from open-ended inquiry that, like yoga itself, follows loving-kindness into wisdom.
