Back to the Best Western! As my nomadic little film society continues struggling to survive the pandemic, I’m grateful for the series of hotel conference rooms that have taken us under their collective wing (while many other public venues potentially poised to host haven’t been so accommodating). My plan was to do each of the meeting rooms in question once apiece, but since the Best Western’s rental rate is by far the most reasonable of all, one good turn deserves another!
I thought, part and parcel to giving the Best Western a shout, why not have an evening of cinematic westerns of all kinds. We’ll kick things off with something fitting the profile of a modern western, the 1971 documentary “American Dreamer,” set amid the tumbleweeds and sagebrush of the New Mexican outback as it examines actor-writer-director Dennis Hopper’s carte-blanche period following the success of “Easy Rider” (believe it or not, my 16mm print hails from the late Mr. Hopper’s personal film archive).
After which we’ll proceed with some John Wayne here, some pasta there, and while perhaps not being among the very best westerns, there’ll be no slouches on the program, either.
The event will begin at 7 pm on Friday, April 2nd. Free, with donations welcome (free food as well). The usual Covid-19 restrictions apply. The Best Western (Plus) is located at 446 Rt. 3 (next to 99 Restaurant) in uptown Plattsburgh. Please register your interest in attending either by e-mailing serious_61@yahoo.com or calling/texting 518-802-1220.
