Chris is “on the road again,” this time to the Land Trust Alliance (LTA) Rally in California, accepting the accreditation certificate and pennant from Rand Wentworth, executive director of the LTA on behalf of CATS. The Rally also provides many wonderful workshops, learning opportunities, and ideas that he will bring back to continue to make CATS even better!
Visiting Volunteers
As Chris mentioned in last week’s email, we had a group of volunteers here this week. The American Hiking Society’s “Volunteer Vacation” program is for people who enjoy working on trails and choose to donate their time to a non-profit organization like ours. This year, the group worked with Stewardship Coordinator Bill Amadon to make the NEW “Sophie’s Lair Trail” on Reg and Jenny Bedell’s property.
The trail will be a 4-mile, easy loop (great for hiking and cross-country skiing) leading from the Florence Hathaway Trail through woods, wetlands, and crossing small creeks. The group spent the week making the trail and thanks to them, it’s almost finished. Bill plans to have the trail completed and ready for cross-country skiing this winter. We thank all the volunteers for all their hard work and dedication to making trails for people to enjoy.
Join the Autumn Hike and Harvest Lunch
You can still register for CATS’ first Autumn Hike and Harvest Lunch at DaCy Meadow Farm on Saturday, October 17, 2015. The hike, led by Bill Amadon, begins at 11:30 a.m. on the NEW DaCy Meadow Farm Trail and is followed by lunch at 1:00 p.m. grown and prepared on the farm.
Many thanks to David and Cynthia Johnston of DaCy Meadow Farm for donating ALL proceeds from this event to go toward the funds we still need to “match” the grant we received from the New York State Conservation Partnership Program to hire Bill Amadon as our stewardship coordinator. We are almost there! We only need $2,450 to reach our goal for this year. Please click here now to register for this event and help us make the goal!
Coming up later this month
Saturday, October 24, 2015 – Owl Prowl, CATS Black Kettle Farm Trail, Essex.
These early evening hikes were so popular with young hikers and their families last year that we decided to do them again this fall and winter. Join teacher/naturalist Gregg Van Deussen as he makes owl calls to elicit responses from owls in the woods and meadow. Click here for more information and to register.
