If you have the privilege of getting close to a mink, it’ll stink. But don’t let the smell scare you off. These fierce, wide-ranging members of the weasel tribe offer fine entertainment to those who watch them. (Mink May Stink, But They’re Fun To Watch – mountainlake.org.)
A mink family has inhabited our waterfront off and on over the last few years, but I still learned plenty from this podcast. In fact, I’d never even realized that mink stink!
Here’s an excerpt from a post that I shared on Rosslyn Redux on July 12, 2012 after managing to film a mink on my mobile phone.
I noticed an energetic mink playing around on the rocks. I froze.
Would he vanish if he saw me?
He continued to explore the rock pile undisturbed…
For several minutes I stood motionless, and then I started taking slow steps toward the boat whenever he turned away. Eventually I realized that he wasn’t concerned with me at all. I unsnapped the boat cover and fumbled around in the failing light for my camera. The mink continued to play. (Rosslyn Redux)
Here’s the mink video.

I have encountered mink several times over the past years, both here and in Canada. I send 2 photos taken by me at the Charlotte Ferry dock, on the south side in March of 2012. Fascinating critters. I have seen 1 dragging a fish much bigger than itself over several rocks to its den.
