Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The photo above was shared with us by Susie Drinkwine — thanks again!
The photo is titled, “American Legion Hall, Essex, NY.” Do you recognize the building featured in this photo? Perhaps you know it by another name? The Old Stone Church perhaps? What can you tell us about it? Do you notice anything in the photo that is no longer there today? When do you think the photo was taken?
Here’s what the community already had to say:
Dianne Lansing: Its the old church where the Seniors have lunch. Did they take down that metal thing in the front? And the steeple is gone.
Ghislaine Shedd: We were married in the Congregational church in 1971 by Reverend Robert Bishop…
James X. Bishop: That’s my dad!
Dianne is right that the steeple has been removed from the roof of the old church. Not sure about the metal tower in the front she mentioned — I believe it may be gone as well…do you know?
Can you make out the words written along the top of the photo? The last segment appears to be a date to me — 1941. What do you think?
Do you have any more to share? Please leave a comment with your thoughts.
