Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Have you ever seen this old photograph before? It’s showing us the road going North out of Essex (Lakeshore Road/Essex Road), right at the corner near Lake Champlain. The road is unpaved in the photo.
Now look out at the lake to see the focus of the photograph. Do you see the two boathouses jutting out from shore? Recognize them? Only one of these still remains today: Rosslyn boathouse. I’m not sure which of the two that is because they look very similar in the photo—what do you think? Is Rosslyn boathouse the one further in the background or the one closer?
Do you know the identity of the second boathouse? When was it removed? Whose property is it on? Was it also on the Rosslyn waterfront or perhaps it belonged to owners of the neighboring Dower House or Harmon Noble House? Or was someone else the owner? Share your theories in the comments!
The Rosslyn Boathouse was constructed in 1898, which places the photograph after that date. When do you think it was taken?
Here’s what the community had to say already:
Dianne Lansing: Essex Road looking north with Sherwood Inn boat house in center.
Dianne Lansing: The most northern boathouse is no longer there.
David J. Rice: Ti ferry?
Hmm, the object jutting out near the boathouses resembles a ferry—Does anyone know if a ferry would it have had any reason to be docking in that area? Or perhaps that object is more likely just part of a dock and/or another boat at the boathouse?
