Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Do you recognize this shoreline? What notable landmarks can you see? Where do you think the photo was taken from?
Perhaps if you don’t recognize the scene, it is the two high peaks that are throwing you off because they are no longer there today. The church steeple in the center is the Essex Baptist Church and to the far right the tall object (tower? pipe?) is part of the Essex Horse Nail Company‘s factory. Both are now absent from the town due to fire which destroyed the church in 1943 and the factory in 1918, which dates the photo pre-1918.
Take a look at what the community had to say about this photo. The first missed the mark on the location, but the other two recognized the Essex sites!
Terrence DeMaso: Is that Young Bay in Westport? Between Camp Dudley and Westport’s north west bay?
Mary Butler Burke: Nail factory (Beggs Point) on the far right. Shore line on left just south of Essex Shipyard.
Peter Cross:Looks like a view looking North from Bluff Point. I see the shipyard on the left and Horse Nail factory on the right. I think the Steeple is the Baptist church that is no longer there.
