Every week we share a different image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Last week we shared the image above minus the caption and asked what viewers recognized and if they could name the location or date of the photo.
Do you recognize the site on Lake Champlain? Any landmarks? When do you think it dates to?
I’d never actually heard of this landmark before. Searching for Barn Rock in New York online it tells me that this is in Westport!
Here’s what the community had to say:
Christine Herrmann: Is this Grog Harbor?
Dianne Lansing: South Farm looking north?
Moi Whitman: WEST POINT…
Melissa Jones: I’m with Diane, South Farm looking north.
Bill Mock: Wilsbprobay
Mark Barry: The bay at the bottom of the split rock loop trail in Westport?
Steen Jorgensen: Barn Rock Harbour
There were a lot of guesses, and one was spot on!
The back side of the postcard is below. Click on it to enlarge to better read the text. The postage mark in the corner tells us that the postcard was sent in September of 1912, so it’s over 100 years old!
