Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
I believe the image on the front of this postcard may be a drawing? What do you think? You can click on it to enlarge to better see the details.
The image is titled “The Crater Club, Essex, NY.” Recognize this place? What can you tell us about it — have any stories to share? What has changed?
Here’s a couple comments the community already shared:
Dianne Lansing: It is the Crater Club clubhouse. They used to serve meals there; camps didn’t have kitchens. Many local ladies were employed there.
Matt C. Morian: I remember pulling the roller over the clay tennis courts — hated doing that as a kid in the mid 50’s.
Have any of your own stories to share? Please do so in the comments!
Take a look at the back side of the postcard below. The credit line in the center tells us that the postcard was published for Alexander’s News Room of Essex, and it was published by C.W. Hughes & Co., Inc. or Mechanicville, NY.
The postage shows us it was mailed on June 20, 1939. The postage stamp also reads “Crater Club” along the top — does that mean that the club had it’s own Post Office at that point?

For many years organizations such as the Art Association would occasionally hold Potluck Suppers there in conjunction with their meetings. My mother, Ethel Bernard, would walk around the rooms and tell me of dances she used to attend there when much younger, of tennis games, among other things. She always enjoyed going there whether she was at a supper or a concert. I was fortunate to attend many events with her after she came to live in Essex.

Yes there was a seasonal Post Office in the Crater Club, well before I started it was closed. If I recall correctly, Jane Perry was the last person to work there.

And “Polly” was Postmistress in ~1954 or 1955 I believe. Post Office was under the deck, off the stairs down to the tennis courts.
