Each Monday we share an Essex photo or artifact on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook pageand invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Mary Wade has shared several vintage postcards with us, and now we’re sharing another one that she’s given us! Do you recognize this Essex street in black and white? If not, then take a look at the title “Orchard St. Essex, NY” and it is identified. Looking straight down the road you can see Lake Champlain in the distance.
When do you think this photo was taken? Since the American flag is flying and the trees look pretty full I would say it is summer, but I have no idea what year it is.
What do you recognize in the photo and what is different when compared to how it is today? What do the signs on the left refer to? I believe that the top sign says, “Welcome. Shore Cabins. [?]” and the lower sign says, “[?] Dining Room. [?-Bath].” What do you think? Can you make it out more clearly? Do you know what business it was referring to? I don’t believe the signs are there anymore—or are they?
