Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Recognize this? When do you think this photo was taken? See anything of note? What has changed since then?
The caption reads: “Public Library, Greystone Cottage, Essex, NY.” The building was once owned by the Noble family and was called Greystone Cottage, but it began to be used as a library in the late 1800s and was provisionally granted to the town as a public library in 1899. In 1974, the library was officially sold to the town with the stipulation that it always be used as a library.
One community member shared a comment that sums up its appearance today:
Christine Herrmann: Today, it’s the Belden Noble Library! The building has been restored. All the overgrown vegetation has been removed; the 2nd floor windows have been replaced; the pipe railing is gone. A stone wall has replaced the pipe railing.
Here’s the back side of the postcard:
It does not have any postage or year written on it, so does not help up date the image on the front. Although, the back side does tell is the manufacturer was Eastern Illustrating Co. of Belfast, ME.
