Last Monday, we shared the vintage photo above on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invited our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. Do you recognize this section of road in Essex that appears on this postcard? When do you think it was taken?
The photo is titled “South Main Street, Essex, NY,” which gives away the street, but things have changed since this photo was taken so it might take a bit of close examination before you can figure out how this part of Essex looks today. The photo was taken at some point in the decade of the 1910s, so about 100 years have passed. Replace the dirt road with a paved one and that is closer to today’s Main Street, but to really identify the location look at the buildings.
Check out what the community had to say below when they saw the photo and tried to identify the location:
Steve Mckenna: Headed up Bull Run. The Shed’s old house on the right
Patricia Cole French: Sharon Boisen, isn’t that your house on the very right edge of the photo?
Sharon Boisen: Close! It’s the corner of Mac and Darla’s house and the edge of our driveway just north of their house.
