Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The postcard above we shared with the public last week.
Have you ever seen this postcard before? Do you recognize the location? What landmarks do you see?
We got lots of comments from the community about this one. Read them below:
Stephen Noble: Yes, know this place quite well!
Lorraine Townsend Faherty: I have this card.
Gael Mitchell: As you go around and on the further side, there will be the Crater Club, which was founded and built by my dad Koert D. Burnham and his father, John Burnham. I still live in the area!
Jane McClung TerLouw: I see the little camp south of the lighthouse that was owned by the Simons but is now our home.
Arlene Cummings: Pretty area, and you get to see it every day Jane!
Christine Herrmann: Whallons Bay, Split Rock, and Split Rock Lighthouse!
Cameron Baldock Adair: I see my childhood summers!
Liz Wilson: I believe that post card dates from the 1970s, and that my mom sold it (and others) in her book shop, The Shop on the Shore, which was located in the north end of Wright’s Inn, now the town offices.
Christine Herrmann: We loved The Shop on the Shore book shop!
That’s right, this is an aerial view overlooking the Split Rock formation at Whallons Bay. The Split Rock Lighthouse is visible through the trees in the front center. You can also see several mountain peaks in the background. Can you identify any of them?
Do you agree that the photo was taken in the 1970s? That date seems about right for me for the quality. What do you think?
I enjoyed reading everyone’s thoughts that were inspired by the postcard. One new bit of information I learned was of the past existence of The Shop on the Shore store in what is now the Town Hall — I had never heard of it before this!
