Every week we share a different image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Do you recognize this view? If not, then take a look at the caption that reads, “Split Rock From Crater Club, Essex, NY.” So this scene is looking out from the location of the Crater Club in Essex in the direction of Split Rock and Lake Champlain with the Green Mountains of Vermont in the distance. I think I see the Split Rock Lighthouse in the center — can you make it out?
When do you think this image dates to? Notice any changes compared to today?
I edited the image slightly to try to see what it might have looked like without the aging. Not perfect, but take a look at it below.
The back side of the postcard gives us a little more information about it — click on it to enlarge if needed! The stamped date on the back tells us this was mailed in 1942. Along the center it also tells us that Alexander’s News Room commissioned the creation of the postcard, which was made by C.W. Hughes & Co.
