Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia.
Recognize this site? When do you think this photograph was taken? Notice anything that has changed?
Here’s what the community had to say already:
Lorraine Townsend Faherty: Looks like pic was taken from Hickory Hill.
Ben Durant: Great picture… Turn of the last century maybe… The interesting thing in this pic is the spire in the center of St Johns in the distance. I don’t know what that would be… Must be the other church on Church St…
This is a photograph of St. John’s Episcopal Church as the caption states and the community recognized. The backside of the photograph is to the right. It’s pretty simple and unused. No clues there to date the postcard.
Ben Durant noted the second steeple in the background, and that was precisely the change I was pointing out. That steeple belonged to the old Essex Baptist Church, which burned down in 1943 and is now missing from the Essex skyline. That means this photo pre-dates that year.
