With so many inspired (and inspiring) Essex, NY books and pamphlets already available why create another? And moreover, why a Doodler’s Guide to Essex, NY?
Because we need one, of course!
In fact, we need several: The Doodler’s Guide to Essex, NY Architecture; The Doodler’s Guide to Essex, NY History; The Doodler’s Guide to Essex, NY Recreation; The Doodler’s Guide to Essex, NY Arts… And what about agriculture? And cool local critters like the timber rattlesnakes? There are so many fascinating topics to celebrate about our fair village on Lake Champlain.
Doodler’s Guide? Why Not “Normal” Guide?!?!
But why a doodler’s guide? Why not a glossy Frommer’s Travel Guide? Or an efficient Lonely Planet Travel Guide?
First of all, I’d like to see all three. I favor an abundance mindset, especially when it comes to chocolate and travel. If Frommer’s and Lonely Planet start researching and developing Essex, New York travel guides, I’ll personally welcome them to town, treat them to Essex ice cream and take them windsurfing. And then I’ll ask them the obvious question, “What took you guys so long?”
In short, it’s not an either/or situation. Everyone should be celebrating the Essex renaissance!
To help jump-start the festivities we’re planning to showcase the lives, legends and landmarks of Essex, NY in a series of whimsical but user friendly guides that explore the vibrant heritage that draw residents and visitors to Essex year after year, decade after decade and century after century.
Doodles Make Us Happy
What better way to communicate the creative spirit of Essex than hand drawn doodles? Sure, it’s a little eccentric, but so is Essex. Doodles are inextricably colored by the personalities who animate them. So is Essex. Doodles are quite possibly the least glossy and efficient renderings of reality. So too with Essex. Doodles awaken the imagination and invite wonder. Doodles make us happy.
I’ll wax on a bit about the merits of doodles and doodling in the future, but for now you can imagine an evolving anthology of Essex doodles, simple illustrations that characterize (and sometimes caricaturize) the people and places that set our village apart from all those glossy, efficient destinations around the globe.
Welcome to The Doodler’s Guide to Essex, NY. We hope you enjoy the doodles, and – if the spirit moves you – we hope you’ll feel inspired to create (and share) your own Essex doodles!
