Essex Charlotte Ferry Schedule Early Fall 2013

Lake Champlain ferries are shifting their schedules along with the season. The Essex-Charlotte ferry crossing has begun operating on its early fall hours as of September 3. Our Essex ferry schedule is as follows:

The early fall schedule has begun. Running hours are from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm on the Charlotte, Vermont side, and from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm in Essex, NY.  The ferry will arrive every half hour from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on the Vermont side and from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm on the New York side.

Before and after those times the ferry will arrive every hour. So that is on the hour from 6:00 am-10:00 am and from 5:00 pm-8:00 pm in Charlotte, and in Essex from 6:30 am-10:30 am and from 5:30 pm-8:30 pm.

The late fall schedule will begin November 4th with the ferry arriving on the hour all day. On the NY side it will operate from 6:30 am-8:30 pm and from 6:00 am-8:00 pm at the dock in Charlotte, Vermont.

You can see the complete schedule on the Lake Champlain Transportation (LCT) website. These times may change due to weather conditions.

If you depend the ferry for your transportation needs and want up to date information you can text “LCTFerries” to 24587 to receive important schedule updates on your phone.

Ferry Commuter Card Update

LCT commuter card

With the discontinuation of the round trip tickets commuters on Lake Champlain’s ferries might be interested to know they have an option other than buying a one way ticket every trip. How would you like to have a handy little card you can just give to the teller and swipe when you want to cross the lake? Well, LCT calls it the commuter card!

You may be asking what is the big benefit to this card? Besides not having to dig around for enough change to buy a ticket every time you go to the ferry booth that is. Well, there is a 30% discount on one way tickets! Since one way is all that’s left I’d say that is a pretty large incentive.

How It Works

The commuter card is something like a debit card. There is no fee to purchase the card, you simply put however much money you desire onto the card. Though the initial deposit and each refill must be as of May, 1, 2013: $200.00 minimum. You may refill your card by using cash, check, or credit card at any of the LCT crossing booths when they are open.

Or you may call the Burlington office (802-864-9804) and use a credit card Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm to refill your card. Be wary though, sometimes credit cards may take up to 24 hours to process if you call late in the day.

Also, if for some reason you decide you don’t want the card any more you can return it and get a refund on any money left on the card.

If you happen to lose your card you can replace it for $5.00, and LCT will invalidate your old card (to be sure no one else uses it) and transfer any current money on it onto your new card.

To purchase a rechargable commuter card, download an application and drop it off to one of the LCT ticket booths or mail it to: Lake Champlain Transportation, 1 King Street, Burlington, VT, 05401.

Call 802-864-9804 for more details.

Update

We have been made aware that the commuter card does not have year-long access at the Essex-Charlotte crossing.

It is only good between Charlotte, VT – Essex, NY when Dockmasters are present at the ticket booth.

**Not good for payment on the Charlotte – Essex boat in winter**(LCT)

We encourage you to contact LCT to verify, and forward anything you learn along to us. Contact them at www.ferries.com.

Another popular event, Thursday night open mic will continue this summer. Double check on timing, but I was informed that the loose plan is for open mic night to run from 7:00 to 9:00 PM weekly. All musicians and music lovers are welcome!

Ferry Commuter Card Rate Increase

LCT commuter card

For those who take frequent trips across Lake Champlain on the Essex-Charlotte ferry, you may be interested in acquiring the LCT commuter card to save some money. This card is especially useful since the discontinuation of the round trip tickets. There is a 30% discount on one-way tickets with the card! Learn more about how the commuter card works here.

However, there is an upcoming monetary change that commuter card holders must be aware of! As of May 1, 2013, the minimum purchase and recharge on this card is $200.

Effective May 1st, 2013, there will be a $200.00 minimum purchase for Commuter Cards – new cards as well as recharges.   The administrative costs to manage and service these cards have exceeded our expectations.  Our frequent customers are important to us and we want to maintain the current rate of discount.  Taking this action will allow us to do that.

In addition to Commuter Cards, there are also 20-Ride Commuter Books available if that better suits your needs.  The discount is the same on both options.

For any questions or concerns, please call our office at (802) 864-9804. (LCT)

To purchase a rechargable commuter card, download an application and drop it off to one of the LCT ticket booths or mail it to: Lake Champlain Transportation, 1 King Street, Burlington, VT, 05401. You can refill your already purchased card at any LCT crossing or by calling the Burlington office at (802) 864-9804.

Just a reminder that our Essex-Charlotte crossing is currently on its early spring schedule and the ferry arrives on the hour, although it will soon be shifting to its spring schedule. Keep an eye out for the new schedule.

Storm Delayed Essex Ferry

Nature can be unpredictable and damaging, so it is best to be cautious and keep abreast of weather updates during dangerous weather. “Hurricane Sandy” is now affecting the East Coast, and we are certain to feel some of its effects.

Travel plans are being thwarted. I know several people stranded because of flight cancellations, but a transportation service much closer to home has experienced problems: the Essex-Charlotte ferry!

Yesterday there were delays with the ferry because of the high winds and white-capped waters, and Lake Champlain Transportation (LCT) eventually closed down ferry services early.

“The Charlotte, VT – Essex, NY ferry crossing will be closing early on Monday, 10/29.  The last departure out of VT is 5:00 pm, last departure out of NY is 5:30 pm.” (LCT)

Things seem to have calmed down today, and the ferry is operating as usual. If conditions worsen as other weather effects are felt from the hurricane, then more delays may occur. Though hopefully we won’t see more damaging weather.

Visit the LCT website for further updates, and you can also visit NY Alert for more thorough transportation news.

Late Fall Schedule Begins

Also, be aware that the Essex-Charlotte ferry crossing is operating on its early fall schedule right now, but soon it will be switching over to new hours!

The late fall schedule will begin November 5th with the ferry running on the hour. At the Essex dock the ferry will begin operating from 6:30 am-8:30 pm and at the dock in Charlotte, Vermont from 6 am-8 pm.

You can see the complete schedule on the Lake Champlain Transportation (LCT) website.

The fuel surcharge on ticket prices at the ferry was temporarily dropped as prices went down, but is  back now:

Due to the increasing costs of fuel for our vessels, effective October 15th, 2012, the fuel surcharge on each ticket will increase to 3.5%. (LCT)
