In the spring of 2011 Lake Champlain flooding surpassed all historic water levels. Essex, New York endured severe water damage for weeks on end, devastating many waterfront businesses and severely challenging others that depend upon summer visitors.
Essex on Lake Champlain was launched in June 2011 to counter the discouraging media coverage and to showcase the perseverance and morale of our community. Trumping all odds, Essex residents, businesses and organizations came together and revitalized the town. What started with natural disaster inspired an Essex Renaissance. Repairs were made, businesses recovered and new enterprises were launched. Though disaster loomed ominous only weeks before, the future now shone bright and promising.
And then, at the end of the summer, tropical storm Irene pummeled Essex and other surrounded areas. Though direct impact to lakeside Essex was not severe, Whallonsburg homes were destroyed by the flooding of the Boquet River. Once again the community pulled together to overcome adversity, and a stronger, deeply empathetic and more invested population resulted.
Essex on Lake Champlain has evolved into a community blog celebrating the richness and diversity of our community. In conjunction with our Facebook Group, Facebook Page and Twitter feed, Essex on Lake Champlain has become a communication hub for Essex, NY residents, visitors, businesses and organizations.
