Every Monday we share a vintage image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The painting above we shared last Monday.

Have you ever seen this painting before? I’m sure many recognize the location! Do you? When do you think it was created? Anything else of note?

Many people liked the image when we shared it last week, however, no one made any comments about it. Perhaps it was too obvious that this is Split Rock on Lake Champlain with the lighthouse rising above the trees?

The signature of the artist “H Bunnett” is located on the lower right. Can you tell us anything about the artist? Here’s what I discovered:

British artist Henry Richard S. Bunnett resided in Canada from 1885 to 1889 and created many paintings during his time living there of his local surroundings. Several paintings and drawings were commissioned by David Ross McCord, founder of the McCord Museum of Canadian History.  You can see a selection of 125 works by Bunnett on the McCord Musuem website when you click here. The majority depict buildings and sites of nature.

Along with the painting we shared above I found out that he created another one of Split Rock from a different angle. See it below.

Which do you prefer? Tell us what you think of the paintings! I think they’re both beautiful and it’s too bad Bunnett did not do more paintings of the Essex area.
