Don’t panic. I’m not going to let loose with another diatribe on barnstorming and brainstorming. I promise.
Nor will I balance my rumination on barnstorming and doodling Essex with an equally nebulous look at brainstorming and doodling Essex. Enough is enough. Basta! (As they say in Pamplona when the bulls are breathing down their necks…)
That’s what I won’t do. Not now at least. But I would like to ask a very small favor. It’ll only take a moment of calm contemplation. You might even enjoy it.
Doodling = Brainstorming
I would like you simply to consider the possibility that doodling – simple, old fashioned doodling – is an excellent way to brainstorm.
Doodling is the brooding of the mind. ~ Anonymous
Brooding? If an image of some menacing, frowning, unshaven thug with furrowed brow and a perennial storm cloud hovering over his head popped into your mind, abandon it now. There’s another brooding I’m thinking about when citing this tidy and inspiring quotation. Brooding can also refer to incubating eggs (think of chickens, for example). In other words, doodling is the mind incubating. An idea. An image. Something.
Isn’t that an appealing image? It rhymes with my assertion that doodling is a way to discover, to explore, to create. Doodling is an approach to the familiar that allows it to be surprising and unfamiliar. Or so I am coming to believe…
