What’s Coming up Next?
On Saturday, August 20, CATS is co-hosting the workshop, Manage your Forest Sustainably with Shirley Forest, Inc., owner of almost 5,000 acres of woodlands, at the Whallonsburgh Grange Hall. Shirley Forest President Frank Shirley and Vice President Tim Castner will talk about the type of forest management they have been practicing and discuss how properly working forests preserve biological diversity, support wildlife habitat, provide income, contribute to the local economy, and help maintain the health of the forest. The goal of the workshop is for participants to learn about the history of the Shirley Forests and sustainable forest management. This day-long workshop will begin at 10:30 a.m. with short presentations from Frank Shirley and Tim Caster, followed by Gary Goff of Cornell Extension, Deborah Boyce, Forestry Consultant, and me. After lunch (provided) the group will go on a “woods walk” on Shirley Forest land. There is no charge for this event, but registration is required. (Mountain Biking) Trail of the Week
We’ve had several inquiries about what CATS trails are “mountain bike friendly.” Many of our trails are on private land and some landowners do allow mountain biking, but most bike trails are on old roads or public lands. In the next few weeks we’ll highlight some of them.
Split Rock Wild Forest Trails are open for Mountain Biking
Located on Lakeshore Road 5.8 miles south of Essex or 4.7 miles north of Westport are several trails through New York’s largest protected forest on Lake Champlain. These trails are available for hiking, skiing, and mountain biking and go over and along the mountain, past wetlands, an old quarry, and provide fabulous views of Lake Champlain and the green mountains of Vermont.
Thank you.
