Champlain Area Trails (CATS), an accredited land trust established in 2009, is excited to announce the conservation of 65 acres along with a permanent trail easement providing permanent public access to the Coot Hill – Big Hollow Trail in Moriah, New York. This extraordinary Adirondack property offers scenic views of Lake Champlain. It preserves birdwatching and wildlife habitats as well as significant geological and historical features that contribute to the community and local economy.

CATS has successfully created and maintained over 100 miles of trails, conserved 3,000 acres of land directly and through partnerships, and facilitated hundreds of hikes, outdoor education outings, and volunteer events, drawing thousands of visitors each year to the Champlain Valley. The organization’s mission focuses on trail creation and maintenance, land protection, connecting people to nature, and promoting economic vitality in the region.

“The Coot Hill – Big Hollow Trail is a hidden treasure in the Adirondacks, offering breathtaking views of Lake Champlain and the chance to delve into the area’s rich natural and cultural heritage,” said Arin Burdo, Executive Director of CATS. “By conserving this land, we ensure public access for future generations; we also preserve vital habitats and geological features while enhancing recreational opportunities and boosting the local economy through increased tourism.”

Beginning in May 2025, the Coot Hill—Big Hollow Trail will be featured in the Lake Champlain Revolutionary Quest, a self-guided tour highlighting the region’s pivotal role in the American Revolution. This initiative celebrates the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and focuses on Lake Champlain’s significance in the fight for freedom. The combination of historical importance and natural beauty makes this trail a valuable asset for the local community and visitors.

This conservation effort also secures a permanent trail included in the Moriah Chamber of Commerce’s “Moriah Hiking Challenge,” where participants earn a badge after hiking four trails within the town.

CATS has achieved success in the Champlain Valley thanks to the support of community members, donors, and partners. It is accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, highlighting its commitment to top land conservation and stewardship standards.

This project has been funded in part by a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Adirondack Park Community Smart Growth Program through appropriations from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund (EPF).
