We are ready to announce the 2014 season schedule of events for the Adirondack History Center Museum. See the upcoming programs below:

May 24: Museum opens

May 24 – Oct 13: Marjorie Lansing Porter exhibit on view, 60th Anniversary of the Essex County Historical Society

June 7: Antique & Classic Car Show and opening of Greetings from the Adirondacks: Mid-20^th Century Tourism and Recreation exhibit (also 60th Anniversary of the Land of Makebelieve)

July 20: Historic photos of Elizabethtown by Margaret Bartley, author and historian.

Lecture Series, Tuesdays 7PM, July 8 – August 26
This summer’s lecture series will focus on the development of our region as a vacation and tourist destination, covering amusement parks and more!

July 8 – “The Anthropology of Holidays and Amusement: An introduction to the Birth of Vacations and the Growth of Pleasure Palaces” by Richard Robbins, anthropologist and professor at SUNY Plattsburgh.

July 15 – “Santa’s Workshop: How It Came To Be” by Bob Reiss on the collaboration from fantasy to reality of founders Julian Reiss, Arto Monaco, and Harold Fortune.

July 22 – “Adirondack Eco-Tourism: Past and Future” by Willie Janeway, Executive Director of the Adirondack Council.

July 29 – “Arto Monaco: From Tinseltown to World War II to the Land of Makebelieve” by Anne Mackinnon, historian and president of the Arto Monaco Historical Society

August 5 – “Building Lake Placid’s Sports Culture” by Jim Rogers, Lake Placid resident and Olympic sports researcher.

August 12 – “Roth’s Forge Village at Frontier Town” by Morris Glenn, author and historian. Program describes the small 1800’s industries in North Hudson that were rebuilt and operated as part of the theme park.

August 19 – “Santa’s Workshop & the Land of Makebelieve: They Were There.” The public is invited to share their memories with elves, worker bees, and children who were once drawn to the North Pole and Upper Jay.

August 26 – “The Mountains will Wait for You” documentary and celebration of Forty-Sixer founder Grace Hudowalski with wine & cheese reception.

September 13: Taste of Local Food Festival with Adirondack Harvest

September 19-20: “War of 1812 in the Champlain Valley” presentation by Alan Taylor, historian and Pulitzer-Prize winning author of The Civil War of 1812: American Citizens, British Subjects, Irish Rebels, and Indian Allies at the Whallonsburg Grange Hall (19^th). Plus a walking tour of related sites in the Village of Essex with Morris Glenn and Shirley LaForest, and a panel discussion on military conflicts in the Boquet Valley and Lake Champlain (20th).
