A Bi-Centennial Commemoration of
THE BATTLE OF THE BOQUET
During THE WAR OF 1812
In Remembrance of the 200th Anniversary of a Historic Battle fought on our shores May 14th, 1814.

May 14, 2014, will mark the 200th Anniversary of The Battle of the Boquet, a battle that occurred at the mouth of the Boquet River between the invading British and the local New York Militia under the command of Lt. Col. Ransom Noble and his 37th Regiment, during the War of 1812. Thirty British troops lost their lives there that day, with only two injured in the 37th, none lost. This battle preceded the Battle of Plattsburgh, where the 37th Regiment also served, a pivotal turning point in the War.

Essex will commemorate this important day in our history on Wednesday, May 14th at 11:00 am, with a Wreath Laying ceremony at the Essex Cemetery, followed by a lunch at Daniel Wright’s Inn, now the Essex Town Hall. After lunch there will be tours of Historic local homes with the emphasis on the Nobles, starting with a tour of Greystone by David Hislop. We will also visit Noblewood, the battlefield site.

The day will end with a Dutch Treat dinner at the Essex Inn at 7:00 pm, the cost is $30/person and there will also be a cash bar available. The dinner has limited seating so please RSVP to by calling 637-8281 to reserve a spot.

There will be special guests in attendance, Noble descendants and representatives of the Society of the War of 1812 and the DAR. There will be no re-enactors at this event.

Everything is free open to the public except the dinner.

Events of the Bi-Centennial Commemoration

• Events begin at 11:00 a.m. with a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Essex Cemetery, final resting place of Essex Patriarch General Ransom Noble followed by:
• A tour of the ECHO Schoolhouse;
• Lunch at the Essex Town Hall;
• A tour of Greystone, the home of Ransom Noble’s youngest son, Belden Noble, given by David Hislop, author and historian;
• (Weather permitting) A tour of the grounds of Sunnyside, the home of Ransom Noble’s son, Harmon Noble and grandson, Henry Harmon Noble; and
• A visit to other prominent former holdings of the Noble family including the South Farm and Noblewood.
• 7:00 pm – Dinner available at the Essex Inn (must RSVP).
