I grew up in Wadhams when there was still a post office, a general store, and an Agway farm supply store. Does that sound like a Norman Rockwell calendar illustration? It certainly does when you add a milkman into the mix.
Rain snow or shine Mr. Anson delivered the brunt of our breakfast ingredients. Each week he drove or walked (if too snowy or icy to drive) up our steep driveway lugging his fresh provisions. He let himself in, dropped off the goods, picked up a check that my mother left for him once a month, and continued on his way.
The good old days…

George, my daughter found this site while searching for Anson’s Dairy bottles online. I do have a short history of Anson’s Dairy written by Mrs. Ford Anson if you’re interested. The Anson Family had farms in Essex and in Wadhams in the early 1900’s.
I would love a copy of the short history of the Anson Dairy if you are willing to share it. I have one of their buttermilk cone containers and it is so unique.
Thank you,

Do you know when the Anson Farm operated until in Westport.
You posted this back in 2019. Any chance you still have this article? I would love to see/read it. The Visitor Center in Westport would like to display some information about the dairy this year. (are you one of Dwight & Pat’s daughters?)
Yes, Dwight and Pat are my parents, I am the eldest sister. I am just now seeing this in Dec 2024. I will try to locate that story after the holidays! As a child I didn’t realize that our family would leave such a lasting memory for so many people. I suppose that’s one of the joys of living in a small town.
Cheers, Deborah
I would love to have a copy of this letter. I’m working on a family genealogy project. My maternal grandmother is Mary Anson Duntley, sister to Olive Anson and siblings. My mother is Ann Duntley Pabst, we lived in Plattsburgh.
Hi Tracy,
I remember Great Aunt Mary when she and Uncle Lloyd came to visit her brother (my Grandfather) Dwight and Polly who babysat for me quite a bit. I was mesmerized by her beautiful eyes and her long braid down her back that she braided all the way down to the tiniest end of her hair.
I am just now seeing this in Dec 2024 and will find the story after the holidays. Would love to connect with you more, Tracy!
