This vintage photo captures a historic scene of Main Street in Essex, NY. The buildings featured in this image (from left to right with the buildings’ current occupation in parentheses) are: Wright’s Inn (Town Hall), Essex Community Church, Greystone Cottage (library), Greystone, W.D. Ross Store (Pink Pig), and the old firehouse (Adirondack Art Association).
We added this photo to our Facebook page and asked our viewers what they could tell us about it. Our first commenter named just about all the buildings, and the rest listed some interesting facts and observations! See them below:
Steve Mckenna: Main St. I see the Town Hall, The Church, The Firehouse, Grey Stone, Library, The Emporium.
Robert Hammerslag: Next to the library is the “Beehive” supposed so named because it was, at one point, a clothing workshop/factory and the ladies working there were very industrious.
Dianne Lansing: Not very many trees compared to today.
Adirondack Art Association: Nasty ruts in the street! I’ll go with 1880…

What is a Stereoview?
If this is the first of our shared stereoview images that you’re viewing, then you may be wondering– just what is a stereoview? Historically, photographers produced these double image cards to be used with a stereo viewer. The device gave the appearance of 3-D when you looked through it, hence the mirroring images which would line up with each eye to create the illusion.
We hope you’re enjoying these vintage images! Keep your eyes on the Essex on Lake Champlain blog for more.
