Every Monday we share an image on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page and invite our viewers to play some Vintage Essex Trivia. The featured photo above we shared last week — it’s not in Essex, but it’s an important local landmark on Lake Champlain. Do you recognize the site in this old photograph? Where is it? What can you tell us about it? When do you think the photo was taken?
We got one comment from the community the concisely summed up the site:
Christine Herrmann: Lake Champlain Bridge at Crown Point which connected NY to VT. It became unsafe and was demolished in 2009 to make way for the construction of a new bridge.
That’s right, this is the original Lake Champlain Bridge that has since been replaced by a new one. The photo is dated 1929, which is the year the bridge opened to the public.
This was the text printed on the mount that accompanied this photograph:
“New Lake Champlain Bridge, connecting the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks will be formally dedicated this month. Photo shows: The Lake Champlain Bridge, the new East and West Highway connecting the Green Mountains and Adirondacks, which will be dedicated Monday, August 26th with ceremonies of international importance.”
