We invited you to play Vintage Essex Trivia when we posted this old photo on the Essex on Lake Champlain Facebook page last week. Easily recognizable by the steep arches on the roof over its side door and the distinctive cupola, the building in the center is the former Union Free School in Essex, NY.
The Union School was built in 1867 on the corner of Elm Street and Station Street. This school replaced the smaller, Old Brick Schoolhouse down Elm Street. Union School was abandoned when the construction of a new brick school finished in 1908.
The building was restored in the 1970′s, and has hosted several organizations throughout the years including the Adirondack Art Association, Renew, and the Essex Heritage Center (formerly ECHO).
Take a look at some of the comments we received:
Dianne Lansing: That’s Ethel Bernard’s house on the left and “Mrs. Wells” house in the center and the old school house ….all on Elm St….and Colin Duclon’s house across Rt. 22. …Interesting trellis on the south side of Mrs. Well’s house.
Dianne Lansing: It was the headquarters for the Dunlap Society, and home of the Adirondack Art Assoc.
Tilly Close: Taken before porch put on, used by Ella Johnson & Mr. & Mrs. Wells, then porch removed.
Can you tell us anything more about the Union School or any of these other buildings in the photo? When do you think it was taken?
